Korea University conducted its 2024 freshman class entrance ceremony at the Hwajeong Gymnasium on Thursday, February 29, starting at 10 a.m. The Hwajeong Tiger Dome was filled with more than 7,000 attendees, comprising freshmen and their families.
At the ceremony, Bae Seo-yoon from the Department of Public Administration in the College of Political Science and Economics, and Woo Min-seo from the Division of Biotechnology in the College of Life Sciences and Biotechnology, were recognized and awarded the Anam Scholarship Certificate.
The essence of selflessness ingrained in our community and nation surpasses individual interests. Additionally, Korea University fosters a distinct solidarity and companionship unlike any other. I am confident that each of you will seamlessly integrate into the KU community and emerge as influential members of our future society through your campus experiences.
First and foremost, aspire for grand visions and set ambitious targets. I implore you to expand your horizons beyond personal aspirations and consider the broader welfare—our nation, the global community, and humanity at large. This aligns with the ethos of visionary leaders and trailblazers from Korea University’s rich history. Remember, renowned figures like Mark Zuckerberg, Bill Gates, and the late Steve Jobs laid the foundations of their groundbreaking ventures in their twenties. At Korea University, we are committed to providing steadfast support to our freshmen, empowering them to pursue their lofty ambitions with an open mind and firm resolve.
Secondly, I strongly advocate for reading books. Books serve as repositories of wisdom, experience, and the collective insights of those who have contemplated humanity and the world before us. For students yet to accumulate extensive life experiences, reading a profound book is akin to standing on the shoulders of giants, enabling you to perceive the world from a broader and more enlightened perspective. I believe that reading enhances the depth and breadth of your thoughts. As you delve into the vast array of literature, I hope your life becomes enriched, enlightened, and filled with ambition.
Thirdly, embrace failure and embrace challenges and adventures. I conclude with this message: Venturing into new challenges and adventures often entails periods of uncertainty or even failure. College is a time to embrace these opportunities, a phase where youth, by virtue of their youthfulness, can afford to experiment and learn from their mistakes. You should not shy away from challenges and adventures for fear of failure. Education here transcends academic learning; it embodies the altruistic spirit that Korea University embodies—placing others and society ahead of oneself. This, coupled with a culture of positivity, strong solidarity, and companionship, is cultivated through participation in various interests, activities, and social experiences beyond your major. Merely being part of KU does not automatically imbue you with its spirit. It is something that truly manifests when you take an active role in shaping your journey, confronting new challenges with enthusiasm and a proactive approach to life, never settling for the status quo. I urge the freshmen to play an active role in creatively charting a new course for South Korea as it asserts its presence on the global stage.
President Kim Dong-one delivered his address at the entrance ceremony:
Seung Myung-ho, President of the Korea University Alumni Association, commenced his motivational speech by acknowledging, “Each individual present here has navigated through a profoundly challenging and rigorous period of preparation, armed with determination, patience, and wisdom.”
He then transitioned to highlight the significance of the Alumni Association, stating, “Upon enrolling at Korea University and ultimately graduating, you will have a distinctive source of pride: becoming a member of the KU Alumni Association.” He proceeded to mention, “The KU Alumni Association is admired by many for its unmatched unity and generous inclusivity.” Additionally, he underscored, “Even after graduation, the 360,000 alumni remain united in their affection and pride for their alma mater, actively spearheading scholarship initiatives for underclassmen and contributing to the university’s advancement,” expressing his admiration for KU.
“The knowledge, experiences, and sentiments you acquire during your college years will serve as a sturdy foundation and invaluable asset for the remainder of your life. Therefore, do not hesitate to explore, listen, and immerse yourself in novel experiences,” he stressed.
Concluding his speech, he remarked, “Freedom—to cherish oneself, to explore and pursue aspirations, and to embrace challenges! Justice—that extends love not only to oneself but also to companions, neighbors, and society, and possesses the courage to advocate for them! Truth—that consistently illuminates the path for the future of our nation and humanity!” Reminding the freshmen of the spirit of Korea University, he affirmed that they are supported by a community of esteemed alumni who will always be there to safeguard and assist them.
In celebration of the newly admitted students, various student clubs, including the orchestra, choir, and KUDT (Korea University Dance Team), presented joyous performances. Additionally, the cheering squad provided an opportunity for the freshmen to experience Korea University’s spirited and impressive cheers.
