“Moleculous: Transforming Chemistry Education into a Game for Students”

At the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Moleculous revolutionizes the study of organic chemistry. This innovative computer application offers interactive 3D visualizations of molecular structures, aiding students in grasping complex chemical concepts crucial for pharmaceutical education and drug development.

Understanding the spatial arrangements of molecules is essential for Pharmaceutical Sciences students, yet it can be challenging with traditional methods. Moleculous addresses this by providing tailored digital solutions in collaboration with the Biomedical Technology Lab at KU Leuven, allowing students to build molecules step by step while receiving feedback to enhance learning.

Unlike conventional approaches relying on physical models or 2D drawings, Moleculous introduces interactive 3D visualizations, enhancing teaching and learning experiences. Designed exclusively for educational purposes, Moleculous seamlessly integrates into courses like General Chemistry and Organic Chemistry in the Pharmaceutical Sciences Bachelor’s program, facilitating hands-on application of lecture knowledge.

Developed with Unreal Engine 5, a game engine known for its advanced capabilities, Moleculous incorporates gamification elements to engage students. Adaptive exercises and rewards based on proficiency levels ensure an immersive learning journey, praised by both educators and students alike for its effectiveness and enjoyment.
