National Science Day 2024: Theme, Objectives, and Importance

Every year, on February 28th, National Science Day is observed, with the theme for this year being ‘Indigenous Technologies for Developed India.’

The theme “Indigenous Technologies for Developed India” aims to underscore a strategic emphasis on fostering public appreciation for Science, Technology, and Innovation, as well as recognizing the achievements of Indian scientists in addressing challenges through domestically developed technologies for overall societal well-being, as stated by the Department of Science and Technology.

National Science Day, commemorating the discovery of the ‘Raman Effect’, serves as an occasion to honor the invaluable contributions and sacrifices made by scientists in our nation’s journey of scientific and technological advancement.

Physicist Sir Chandrasekhara Venkata Raman, also known as CV Raman, discovered the ‘Raman Effect’, earning him the Nobel Prize in science in 1930.

The Department of Science and Technology underscores the importance of making India self-reliant through science, while also emphasizing the need to address subjects that hold significance for humanity as a whole.

The theme was inaugurated by Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Science & Technology and MoS PMO, Personnel, Public Grievances, Pensions, Atomic Energy, and Space, Dr. Jitendra Singh, on February 6, 2024.

Professor Abhay Karandikar, Secretary of DST, remarked, “As the scientific community from the States S&T Councils have also joined for the launch of NSD Theme, I must say that together we can create an ecosystem that encourages scientific inquiry and collaboration across the nation to leverage the transformative power of science for the greater good.”
