A faculty member from AMU delivers a speech commemorating the Platinum Jubilee.

In Aligarh, Professor MJ Warsi, Chairman of the Department of Linguistics at AMU and President of the Linguistic Society of India, delivered the Platinum Jubilee Speech titled “India Speaks in Many Voices” at the event “Linguistics in Sixty Years,” organized by the Department of Linguistics at the University of Kerala on February 29. Prof. Warsi explored India’s rich linguistic diversity, likening it to a vibrant flower pot adorned with various hues and sizes. He emphasized the role of language in fostering cultural understanding, highlighting how linguistic diversity serves as India’s strength. Prof. Warsi also honored ancient linguistic traditions, particularly the contributions of Panini, whose Astadhyayi remains a milestone in linguistic analysis. Discussing modern language evolution, he examined the intertwined histories of Hindi and Urdu, tracing their origins to the Mughal Empire. Despite formal differences, these languages share a common vernacular, reflecting India’s linguistic syncretism. Prof. Warsi advocated for a pluralistic language policy, endorsing the use of vernacular languages in education and administration. He commended the National Education Policy 2020 for its focus on mother tongue-based education and stressed the importance of preserving endangered languages.
