    National Science Day was celebrated with enthusiasm.

    ALIGARH: The Department of Physics at Aligarh Muslim University organized a commemorative program on National Science Day-2024, which marks the discovery of the Raman Effect by Indian physicist Sir C. V. Raman on February 28, 1928, for which he was awarded the Nobel Prize.

    During his address, the chief guest, former Vice Chancellor of HNB Garhwal University, Prof. S. K. Singh, highlighted the scientific contributions of Sir C.V. Raman and discussed the significance of his discovery in today’s context. He emphasized the importance of exposing students to the scientific research conducted by their teachers, as it plays a crucial role in nurturing future scientists and advancing scientific innovations in the nation.

    The guest of honor, Prof. S. Umasankar from the Department of Physics at the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay, reminisced about his interactions with colleagues from AMU on various topics and shared research anecdotes. He encouraged students and young faculty members to adopt a modern scientific outlook, cultivate critical thinking skills, and question everything encountered in their studies. He also delivered a talk titled “Neutrinos: What we know and what we don’t” during the evening session.

    The special guest, Prof. Kajari Mazumdar from the Department of High Energy Physics at the School of Natural Sciences, Tata Institute of Fundamental Research, Mumbai, highlighted the collaborations between AMU faculty members and TIFR personnel, emphasizing the importance of academic exchange and fostering new ideas. She motivated students to approach the study of science with enthusiasm and curiosity and delivered a talk titled “The Higgs Boson: Why and How?”

    Prof. Qamrul Hasan Ansari, the Dean of the Faculty of Science, stressed the significance of celebrating Science Day and proposed methods to enhance research quality, which would ultimately contribute to improving the university’s ranking.

    Prof. M. Sajjad Athar, Chairman of the department, welcomed the guests, provided an overview of the department’s recent activities, and highlighted its achievements. The Physics Bulletin-2024 and the Annual Report-2023 were released by the chief guest, Prof. S. K. Singh.

    Prof. Umasankar and Prof. Mazumdar served as judges for the poster presentation competition held as part of the day’s events.

    Dr. Jai Prakash, Convener of the National Science Day Celebrations Committee, conducted the program and extended a vote of thanks.
