The NMC has initiated action to address suicides by establishing a national task force aimed at tackling mental health issues among medical students.

In response to concerns regarding depression and suicide among medical students, the National Medical Commission (NMC) has formed a national task force. This task force will examine the factors contributing to these challenges and recommend evidence-based strategies to enhance mental health.

The 15-member task force, led by Dr. B M Suresh, a Professor in the Department of Psychiatry at the National Institute of Mental Health and Neuro-Sciences (NIMHANS), has been formed to address concerns about the mental health of medical students, including depression and suicide.

As per an office order issued on February 21, the National Task Force was established by the anti-ragging committee of the National Medical Commission (NMC) in response to recent instances of depression and suicide among medical students.

According to its terms of reference, the task force will examine existing literature and data on the mental health and suicide rates of medical students, identify contributing factors to these challenges, and propose evidence-based strategies to enhance mental health support and suicide prevention.

Furthermore, the committee will conduct visits to colleges where suicide incidents have been reported to gather insights and recommendations.

The task force is expected to deliver a comprehensive report outlining its findings and actionable recommendations for improving the mental health of medical students by May 31, 2024. It will also provide monthly progress reports to the anti-ragging cell.

Regular meetings, either virtual or in-person, will be convened by the task force as needed to fulfill its objectives. Additionally, visits to medical colleges where suicide incidents have occurred may be arranged by the committee.
