Why did Elon Musk take legal action against the creator of ChatGPT? A leading executive at OpenAI suggests Musk is ‘regretful for not being part of

OpenAI’s Chief Strategy Officer, Jason Kwon, has responded to Elon Musk’s allegations that the San Francisco-based AI firm has deviated from its foundational vision of developing publicly accessible, open-source AI. Instead, Musk accuses the company of effectively becoming a subsidiary under Microsoft’s control. Kwon firmly refutes these accusations, stating in an internal memo reported by Bloomberg that Musk likely feels a sense of remorse for his current lack of involvement with OpenAI.

Elon Musk has initiated legal action against OpenAI, leveling charges of contract breach, fiduciary duty breach, and engaging in unfair business practices. He argues that OpenAI has violated its founding principles and demands a return to an open-source framework.

In a significant development reported by Axios, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman aligns with Kwon’s perspective, acknowledging the challenges faced and anticipating ongoing scrutiny and criticism.

Addressing Musk’s critique directly, Kwon asserts OpenAI’s independence in decision-making regarding research directions, operational management, and product and service offerings, emphasizing competition with Microsoft in delivering superior value and innovations to a broad user base. Despite the collaboration with Microsoft on products like ChatGPT for Enterprise, Kwon highlights OpenAI’s commitment to its mission and the unique capabilities of GPT-4, OpenAI’s most advanced language model. He clarifies that while GPT-4 shows promise in augmenting human tasks across various jobs, the vision for a fully autonomous AGI capable of innovative problem-solving is still a work in progress, underscoring the vast potential yet to be realized.
