Four Caltech faculty members have been granted the esteemed Sloan Research Fellowship for the year 2024. They are:
– Katie Bouman, assistant professor in computing and mathematical sciences, electrical engineering, and astronomy.
– Lee McCuller, assistant professor of physics.
– Vikram Ravi, assistant professor of astronomy.
– Antoine Song, assistant professor of mathematics.
The fellowships recognize exceptional researchers in the United States and Canada, acknowledging their creativity, innovation, and research achievements as they emerge as future leaders. Established in 1955, the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation annually awards these fellowships. Among the 126 early-career scientists selected for the fellowship, the Caltech professors stand out. The fellowship provides $75,000 over two years to support their research endeavors.
Katie Bouman is a computational imaging scientist renowned for her groundbreaking work in signal processing, computer vision, machine learning, and physics. She played a pivotal role in the Event Horizon Telescope project, which captured the first image of a black hole in 2019.
Lee McCuller specializes in creating technologies for precise measurements, particularly in the realm of quantum measurements utilized in the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-wave Observatory (LIGO).
Vikram Ravi focuses on energetic dynamic events in astronomy, such as fast radio bursts (FRBs), and has led the development of the Deep Synoptic Array-110 at Caltech’s Owens Valley Radio Observatory.
Antoine Song is an expert in differential geometry, delving into the study of shapes using analysis and differential equations. His research contributes to a better understanding of minimal surfaces and aspects of Albert Einstein’s general theory of relativity.
