A seminar on the ‘Impact of Hiring & Firing Laws’ took place at IUST.

The Department of Economics at the Islamic University of Science and Technology organized a One-day seminar titled “Impact of Hiring and Firing Laws on Factor Productivity: A unit level analysis using judicial outcome index” as part of a larger project sponsored by Azim Premji University.

In his welcome address, Prof. S.M. Shafi, Head of the Department of Economics, stressed the importance of high-quality research in the field of employment laws and commended the department’s efforts in conducting advanced economic analyses.

The keynote address was delivered by Prof. Santosh Mehrotra, Visiting Professor at the University of Bath, U.K., who emphasized the need to address issues related to informality and slow employment growth in India’s manufacturing sector. Prof. Mehrotra highlighted the significance of employment protection laws in segmented labor markets.

Presenting the project findings, Dr. Irfan Ahmad Sofi, Principal Investigator of the project, demonstrated how hiring and firing laws influence the dynamics of the labor market, particularly factor productivity growth in industrial businesses. He emphasized that the new labor codes introduced by the central government will create a favorable environment for industrial development, leading to increased industrial growth and employment generation in the economy.

The program was coordinated by Dr. Mehak.
