A delegation from the University of Waterloo visits Tokyo Tech.

On February 20, a delegation led by President Vivek Goel from the University of Waterloo in Canada, which maintains an Institutional-Level Agreement with Tokyo Tech, visited the Ookayama Campus. President Goel’s visit followed a courtesy call made by Associate Vice President Ian Rowlands in October 2023.

During the visit, the delegation engaged in fruitful discussions with various Tokyo Tech leaders, including President Kazuya Masu, Executive Vice President for Institute Strategy and Provost Isao Satoh, Vice President for International Affairs Nobuhiro Hayashi, Dean of the School of Science Kotaro Yamada, Dean of the School of Engineering Kotaro Inoue, Dean of the School of Life Science and Technology Susumu Kajiwara, and Dean of the School of Environment and Society Jun-ichi Takada, regarding further international cooperation initiatives.

Founded in 1957, the University of Waterloo boasts Canada’s largest faculty of engineering. It shares notable similarities with Tokyo Tech, as both institutions trace their origins back to vocational education and prioritize interdisciplinary approaches to education and research aimed at addressing global challenges through convergence science.

The University of Waterloo’s extensive internship programs with a wide range of industry partners provide valuable insights that could benefit Tokyo Tech, enhancing discussions and potential future collaborations.

Following the meetings, the delegation toured two laboratories: Associate Professor Kosuke Fujishima’s laboratory at the Earth-Life Science Institute (ELSI) and Associate Professor Tetsuo Kodera and Specially Appointed Associate Professor Jun Yoneda’s laboratory in the Quantum Computing Research & Education field at the Academy for Super Smart Society. During these visits, they exchanged views and opinions on various topics.
