In Jammu and Kashmir, there is an age relaxation provision for admissions to Class 1.

In SRINAGAR, the Director of the Jammu School Education Department has announced a modification in the age requirements for admission to Class 1 for the academic session 2024-25.

As per a circular issued by the Director, concerns were raised by several parents regarding their children being ineligible for admission to Class 1 due to not meeting the age criterion of six years, as stipulated in the National Education Policy 2020. Recognizing these concerns and acknowledging the potential academic setbacks for some students if the age criteria were strictly enforced, the department has decided to gradually implement the National Education Policy.

Consequently, a one-time relaxation in the age criteria for admission to Class 1 for the academic session 2024-25 has been approved. This relaxation applies to students who will attain the age of six within the next six months, up to September 30, 2024.

While emphasizing that this relaxation is a one-time exception, the circular also highlights its alignment with similar measures adopted by other states. Additionally, it underscores the necessity to establish an upper limit for such relaxations to ensure effective management of the transition period.
