A first-year student at IIT Bombay has voiced criticism against the institute’s teaching and grading methods, igniting a social media debate. In a Reddit post, user ‘dengo302005’ disputed the perception of IIT Bombay as a pinnacle of education, asserting it to be quite the opposite. The post, shared about a month ago, has gained traction amid discussions on the impact of the global economic slowdown on IIT placements. A recent report suggested that 36 percent of students are yet to secure jobs, although the institute countered this with an exit survey conducted among its students.
Speaking about their experience at the esteemed institute, the Reddit user expressed dissatisfaction, stating, “It hasn’t been that great.” Titled “IIT Rant,” the post by the first-year student at IIT Bombay highlighted issues with the grading system, heavily reliant on the subjectivity of Teaching Assistants (TAs), undermining the educational process.
“People outside of this college (including my parents) think of it as a ‘golden gateway to supreme education,’ but it is exactly the opposite,” the post further remarked.
NDTV cannot independently verify the post, but it has garnered significant attention online, eliciting nearly 100 comments and around 250 votes on Reddit.
Various users shared their own experiences and disillusionment with the education system, with one commenting, “I am doing civil in an old IIT and I feel the same… Everything feels very useless all of a sudden.” Another advised, “Try not to get disenchanted with the system… Relax and be cool. Later in life, when you look back, you will relish these memories.”
Earlier this month, a report in Hindustan Times suggested that approximately 712 out of the 2,000 registered students in IIT Bombay are still without job offers this session. However, the institute released a survey countering the report, indicating that only 6.1 percent of graduates are seeking jobs, while the majority (57.1 percent) secured jobs through IIT Bombay’s placement process.
